Karen Cushman was born on October 4, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up she truly enjoyed reading. She would read anything and everything. However, she especially enjoyed reading about the medieval times. She spent a lot of her time growing up at the public library. While Cushman was growing up she hoped to be a librarian. When Cushman was ten years old she moved with her family to Los Angles, California. As a child she did not like moving to California and wanted to return to Chicago, Illinois. She later used this experience when writing The Ballad of Lucy Whipple. She then went on to use her interest of the medieval times to write many other books.
